Happy new year! This time of year always feels like a fresh start. People are making resolutions, setting intentions, and looking for ways to improve their minds and bodies in the months ahead.

At Turning Point Wellness Center in Waterloo and Red Bud, Illinois, we hope that your goals for 2024 include a renewed focus on your health and wellness.

If you’re looking for a way to improve your wellness beyond the resolution staples of diet and exercise, we’d like to suggest acupuncture.

What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese technique that’s been practiced for over 4,000 years. It’s based on the philosophy of yin and yang. These two types of energy are believed to be ever present in the body flowing along pathways to keep balance.

This energy, also known as qi, travels the pathways, or meridians, through roughly 2,000 acupuncture points. If the path becomes blocked or gets out of balance, the body is less healthy.

Placing acupuncture needles in the correct acupuncture points located on the meridians, gets the qi flowing again which restores balance and, in turn, makes the body healthier and makes you feel rejuvenated.

Is an ancient technique really still relevant?

Absolutely! There is a good reason why the practice of acupuncture has stood the test of time.

Acupuncture is a natural and painless – yes, we said painless – way to treat and prevent a number of medical conditions, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Depression
  • Digestive Problems
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
  • Infertility
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Migraine and Headache
  • Morning Sickness
  • Nicotine Addiction (Smoking)
  • Premenstrual Syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • Sinusitis and Asthma
  • Sports Injuries
  • Stress
  • Weight Loss

While this practice has remained largely the same over time, modern technology has made it easier than ever to pinpoint exactly where a patient would benefit from acupuncture the most.

The Benefits of AcuGraph

AcuGraph is a digital meridian imaging system that uses modern technology to track patients’ acupuncture channels.

The chiropractic physician places the tool at specific acupuncture points on the patient’s body. The tool measures the electrical skin resistance then captures, analyzes, and interprets the measurements.

All of the data is immediately available to the doctor and patient electronically to show areas of the body that are out of balance. This indicates to the practitioner precisely which acupuncture points to tap during the procedure for more precise placement.

Acupuncture and AcuGraph

This imbalance can cause the patient to experience various physical and emotional issues such as digestive problems, depression, feelings of anger, dizziness, and headaches.

By placing a needle in the corresponding acupuncture point, Dr. Jen will clear the liver meridian and allow the energy to flow and regain qi in the pathway.

Typically, the same treatment plan is performed for two or three sessions, then Dr. Jen will use AcuGraph to re-measure a patient’s meridians and track progress.

To those not familiar with AcuGraph or acupuncture, that explanation can sound like a lot of confusing jargon but don’t let that dissuade you! AcuGraph is a great tool, especially for those just starting to explore the practice of acupuncture.

For example, let’s say a patient comes into Turning Point Wellness Center to try acupuncture for the first time. Perhaps they have a specific ailment or maybe they are just curious and want to try it for general well being.

Dr. Jen Kujawski will take the first few minutes of the session to use AcuGraph on the patient. After retrieving the results she sees that the patient's liver meridian is out of balance.

The liver meridian starts at the big toe and travels up the body to a spot just below the breast area. This imbalance has been discovered by placing the acugraph pen on the liver meridian starting point on the patient’s toe.
